Overview

Multiplexr is an open-source personal media library for Android 7.0 and newer. Organize movies, TV shows, videos, music, audiobooks, ebooks, and comics into collections, then play or read them in the app. The current release is 0.5.0; the public source code is licensed under GPL-3.0-only.

Scope

Users organize files into collections, each with its own source folders, file types, media details, artwork, and settings. Spaces let users browse and get an overview of one collection or several collections together. The app tracks playback and reading progress, favorites, queues, and details specific to each media type.

Stack

Flutter, Dart, Kotlin, Media3 / ExoPlayer, SQLite, and QuickJS with C/C++ and JNI. JavaScript plugin SDK with TypeScript support.

Engineering challenge

Adding a plugin platform without tightly coupling it to the app or putting library data at risk. The work involved isolating plugins, enforcing permissions, and defining stable APIs, including how access is revoked and how background jobs and backup restores affect playback and reading progress.

Involvement

I build and maintain Multiplexr, from the media library and playback tools to the reading experience and plugin system. I released version 0.5.0 and published the source code under GPL-3.0-only.
